What is MOTS-c?
MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide (MRWQEMGYIFYPRKLR) encoded by a short open reading frame within the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene — one of the mitochondrial-derived peptides identified in the last decade.
What is it studied for in the laboratory?
MOTS-c is used in the laboratory to study mitochondrial-to-nuclear signalling, AMPK activation and folate–methionine cycle regulation in cell culture, and in preclinical models of metabolic homeostasis and cellular stress response.
Mechanism
In reported studies MOTS-c inhibits the folate cycle and de-novo purine synthesis, raising AICAR and activating AMPK; under metabolic stress it translocates to the nucleus and regulates adaptive gene expression through antioxidant-response elements.
